Web Design Color Conversion & Inspection

Inspect, pick, and copy color values across web standards including HEX, RGB, and HSL formats.

1. HEX Color Codes

Standard 6-character hexadecimal color notation used across CSS stylesheets and design systems.

2. RGB Channels

Red, Green, and Blue subpixel channel values ranging from 0 to 255 for digital display rendering.

3. Native Browser Eyedropper

Leverages HTML5 input type color picker APIs for smooth cross-browser color selection.

About the Color Picker

The Color Picker converts a single colour between the notations CSS and design tools expect: HEX, RGB, HSL and HSV. Grab a hex value from a brand guideline and get the HSL equivalent for building a tint scale, or convert an RGB value from a screenshot into the hex form you can paste into a stylesheet. Shades and tints are generated alongside so you can assemble a consistent palette.

How to use the Color Picker

  1. Choose a colour from the picker or paste an existing value.
  2. Read the equivalent HEX, RGB, HSL and HSV notations.
  3. Copy the format your stylesheet or design tool expects.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between HSL and RGB?

RGB describes a colour by how much red, green and blue light it mixes, which matches how displays work but is unintuitive to adjust. HSL describes hue, saturation and lightness, so producing a lighter or more muted variant of the same colour means changing one number.

What does an 8-digit hex code mean?

The final two digits are the alpha channel, giving opacity from 00 (fully transparent) to FF (fully opaque). #FF000080 is red at roughly 50 percent opacity.

How do I pick accessible colour combinations?

Compare the contrast ratio between text and background. WCAG AA requires at least 4.5:1 for normal text and 3:1 for large text; AAA requires 7:1. Adjusting lightness in HSL is the easiest way to reach a target ratio while keeping the hue.
