Understanding Cron Expression Format & Syntax
Cron is a time-based job scheduler in Unix-like operating systems. A standard 5-field cron expression consists of:
1. Field Positions
[Minute] [Hour] [Day of Month] [Month] [Day of Week]
2. Wildcards & Ranges
Use * for any value, */N for step values, and 1-5 for ranges.

Frequently asked questions
What do the five cron fields mean?
In order they are minute (0-59), hour (0-23), day of month (1-31), month (1-12) and day of week (0-6, where 0 is Sunday). An asterisk means every value for that field.
What does */15 mean in a cron expression?
It is a step value meaning "every 15 units" of that field. In the minute position, */15 runs at :00, :15, :30 and :45 of every hour.
What happens if I set both day of month and day of week?
In standard Vixie cron the two are combined with OR, not AND, so the job runs when either condition matches. This surprises people frequently: 0 0 1 * 1 runs on the first of the month and on every Monday.
